Formula 1 2024: All eyes on Red Bull and Max Verstappen

“It’s lights out and away we go”! We have 10 days left before we hear David Croft’s voice marking start of the first Formula 1 race of the 2024 season.

This season will also be the longest ever in F1, featuring 24 races in 21 countries. Off-season provided some shocks, with main points being announcement of Lewis Hamilton signing multi-year contract with Ferrari from 2025, and allegations of inappropriate and controlling behaviour towards a female colleague by Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari in a shocking move

The seven-time world champion signed a two-year contract with Mercedes last season, but had a break clause after one year, which the Briton has chosen to activate. Season 2024 will mark the end of his 11 years with the team from Brackley, as he will drive for Scuderia from 2025.

“I’m proud of the success achieved in Mercedes. Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It's a place where I have grown up, so making this decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made”, said Hamilton.

Hamilton joined Mercedes from McLaren in 2013, and secured six of his seven championships with the team. He won 82 of his record 103 races with Silver Arrows.

Stevenage-born will be 40 when he joins the Maranello team.

"I feel incredibly fortunate, after achieving things with Mercedes that I could only have dreamed of as a kid, that I now have the chance to fulfil another childhood dream. Driving in Ferrari red."

In the Ferrari F1 team, Hamilton will replace Carlos Sainz, who will be driving for his Formula 1 future this season and looking for other seats available 2025 onwards.

Can anyone stop Max Verstappen and Red Bull?

Hamilton will want to leave Mercedes on high. Winning a record breaking 8th world championship would be the perfect way to part ways with the team that made him one of the best in history.

Christian Horner controversy

Red Bull’s team principal has faced allegations of inappropriate and controlling behaviour towards female colleague.

Christian Horner has led the team since 2005 and managed some of the best drivers in last 20 years, with multiple world champions in Sebastian Vettell and Max Verstappen as the two most prominent names.

Horner has denied the allegations, but there is no conclusion of the situation yet. Formula 1 issued a statement, urging Red Bull to resolve controversy as soon as possible.

Situation has put a shadow over new Red Bull F1 car, RB20 which has drawn inspiration from other outfits, including Mercedes’ bodywork with gulley running from halo system throughout the top of the engine cover.

Horner and his team of designers and engineers have made bold changes to the dominant car from last year.

"It just shows the hunger that there is in this team. You know, we had such a dominant car last year that you wouldn't imagine us changing the concept as much, and I think it's really brave from Red Bull to do that”, said Sergio Perez.

Future-defining season for many drivers

The 2023 season didn’t bring major changes to the grid, but 2024 definitely will. Some 13 drivers are out of contracts for next season, including Red Bulls Sergio Perez, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, both Alpine, Sauber, Haas, Visa Cash App RB and Williams drivers.

Lance Stroll could also leave Aston Martin, although his contract length isn’t publicly know.
