2025-07-28

One of the standout weeks in the horse racing calendar is here.

From the glamour of Glorious Goodwood to the unmissable drama of the Galway Festival, with a handful of intriguing one-day meetings across Britain and Ireland, this is a week that every racing fan circles on the calendar.

Top-class horses, elite jockeys and historic tracks set the stage for a string of races where form, tactics and a touch of luck will decide who takes the headlines.

Monday – Galway Gets Under Way

The week opens with the first evening card at Galway, a festival that blends high-class Flat and jumps racing.

On the Flat, Too Bossy For Us is strongly fancied to dominate the feature 2m1f handicap.

Away from Galway, Yarmouth’s £30,000 novice contest over 7f sees Starlight Time, an impressive maiden winner, look to continue his rise.

Tuesday – Goodwood Cup Day

The opening day of Qatar Goodwood Festival features the Goodwood Cup, a Group 1 staying contest where Aidan O’Brien throws forward both Illinois and Scandinavia, while French Master, a Copper Horse Stakes winner at Ascot, poses a major threat.

The undercard is equally strong, with Kinross bidding for a remarkable third win in the Lennox Stakes, while the Vintage Stakes will showcase some of the season’s most promising juveniles. Galway keeps the evening energy alive with Mississippi River and Orandi headlining the feature Flat race for €120,000.

Wednesday – Sussex Stakes & Galway Plate

The Sussex Stakes is the midweek highlight, and this year’s renewal is stacked with talent. Field Of Gold, fresh from Group 1 victories at Royal Ascot and the Irish Guineas, steps up against older horses including the talented Rosallion and the Classic-winning Henri Matisse.

Add Docklands, who impressed in the Queen Anne Stakes, and you have one of the most competitive Group 1 miles of the season. In Ireland, all eyes are on the Galway Plate, with Nurburgring heading the betting but strong challenges coming from Jazzy Matty and Down Memory Lane.

Thursday – Nassau Stakes Headlines

Day three at Goodwood is all about the fillies and mares in the Nassau Stakes. Whirl, winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes, faces a strong field including Coronation Stakes heroine Cercene, See The Fire and Bedtime Story from the same yard.

The Richmond Stakes and Gordon Stakes provide further Group action, with Merchant, who captured the King George V Stakes at Ascot, looking like a major player again.

Galway switches to a daytime card with the Galway Hurdle and the Corrib Fillies’ Stakes as the main attractions.

Friday – King George Qatar Stakes

Friday belongs to the sprinters in the King George Qatar Stakes, where Royal Ascot winners Asfoora and Time For Sandals lead the market.

Last year’s winning trainer, Mick Appleby, is back with Big Mojo, hoping to emulate the exploits of Big Evs.

The undercard includes the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes, which has produced future stars, while over at Galway the Guinness Handicap brings its usual big-field drama under the evening lights.

Between them, we will have all-weather races at Southwell and Newcastle.

How To Bet On Horse Racing: Tips and Strategies For Winning

Saturday – Stewards’ Cup Day

The final day of Goodwood is all about the Stewards’ Cup, one of the trickiest handicaps to predict.

Get It, who landed the prize last year at 40-1, returns to defend his crown, but the likes of Elmonjed for Shadwell are waiting to pounce.

The day also features the Glorious Stakes and Lillie Langtry, both strong supporting Group races.

Over in Galway, a Listed 2m6½f handicap hurdle promises another tough betting heat.

Sunday – Deauville and Dusseldorf Take Over

The British and Irish Group 1 action pauses, but France and Germany step up with the Prix Rothschild at Deauville and the German Oaks in Dusseldorf.

Back in Ireland, Galway wraps up its festival with the competitive Ahonoora Handicap, while Chester and Yarmouth offer a quieter but classy Sunday programme.

How To Bet On Horse Racing?

Before discussing how to bet on racing events, we must look into what are the strategies and tips?

First, we need to know some basic terms in horse race wagering.

What do horse betting terms win, place, and show mean?

These three terms are the basis of horse betting.

Win, as the name suggests, means that you bet on the horse that will finish the race first.

Place bet means that the horse must finish in the first two places for the bet to win.

Show bet means that the horse must finish in the top three for you to win.

How do you Bet and Win on Horse Racing?

Now that you know some key horse wagering terms, it's time to see how to bet on horse racing.

First of all, it is important to do your research, looking at the last performances of the horse you plan to bet on, jockey statistics, and similar information.

Also, as with any type of betting, managing your bankroll is important. Bet what you can afford to lose and put a limit before you.

Track conditions are significant and affect the horses. Some horses run better on soft ground, while others prefer firm conditions.

Horse favourites don't always win. In fact, the favourite's winning percentage is around 30-40%, depending on which research you look at.

Finding an outsider requires the abovementioned things, primarily preparation and research. Still, the potential for winning is really huge!
