2024 US Open Tennis Preview: Key Dates, Favourites & Prize Money

2024-08-26

The final Grand Slam of the tennis season kicks off tonight in New York. Following Olympic Games, the world’s tennis elite gather at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where fierce battles in both the men's and women's competitions are expected.

Where and When is the US Open Played?

Since 1978, the US Open has been traditionally held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Queens, New York.

Managed by the United States Tennis Association, this complex boasts 22 courts, with 12 more located in the adjacent park. The pride of this venue is the Arthur Ashe Stadium, one of the largest tennis venues in the world, with a seating capacity of 23,200.

This year’s US Open begins on 26th August and will run until 9th September, with the men’s final taking place on the last day.

Why is the US Open Known as Flushing Meadows?

The US Open is globally recognised as "Flushing Meadows."

The reason for this is straightforward—the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is situated within Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

What is the Prize Money at the US Open 2024?

The 2024 US Open will distribute the largest prize fund of all the Grand Slam tournaments this year. Both the men’s and women’s singles champions will each receive $3.6 million, which is $900,000 more than the Wimbledon champions earned.

Semi-finalists are set to receive $1.8 million, while even those reaching the quarter-finals will take home over half a million dollars. Just making it to the first round is worth $100,000.

In doubles, the men's and women's champions will each earn $750,000, while the mixed doubles champions will receive $200,000.

Who Are the Men’s Singles Favourites at the US Open 2024?

The men's tournament has been overshadowed by a doping scandal involving world number one, Jannik Sinner. The Italian tested positive during the Indian Wells tournament in March, but this was only made public after his victory at the Cincinnati Masters.

Sinner received a minor penalty and will compete in the US Open, causing controversy over what many see as inconsistent application of the rules.

According to tether.bet odds, Sinner is the third favourite, with odds of 3.00 to win the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz, the winner of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and an Olympic finalist, is the top favourite. The Spaniard arrives in New York ready and motivated to claim the title.

Second in line is Novak Djokovic, chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic has already won the US Open four times—in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2023.

Following them are Cincinnati finalist Alexander Zverev, last year’s US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev, along with Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz. A thrilling contest is expected, with all the main contenders arriving in peak form and ready to cap off an exciting and lengthy tennis season with a trophy.

Who Are the Women’s Singles Favourites at the US Open 2024?

Just like the men, the women’s tournament promises intense competition. Iga Swiatek comes in as the world number one, but the women's game has seen its fair share of ups and downs this season.

Aryna Sabalenka started the year strongly, winning the Australian Open, but Swiatek retaliated during the clay season, claiming Roland Garros, only for Barbora Krejcikova to stun everyone by winning Wimbledon.

According to tether.bet, Sabalenka is the top favourite with odds of 3.10.

The Belarusian player hadn’t won a major title since the Australian Open until she triumphed in Cincinnati without dropping a set, including a victory over Swiatek.

Sabalenka is more comfortable on hard courts, whereas Swiatek excels on clay.

With a favourable draw, the odds for the world number one are set at 4.00.

Another strong contender is the home favourite, world number three, Coco Gauff.

Gauff will be defending her title, which she claimed last year after a comeback victory against Sabalenka (2:1 in sets). Her odds are 7.00, followed by Elena Rybakina and Cincinnati finalist Jessica Pegula.
