What Is the Global Jockeys’ League? Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore and Racing’s $15 Million Revolution

2025-05-05

Twelve of the world’s leading Flat jockeys, including Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore and William Buick, have signed up for a new franchise-based competition set to launch in 2026.

The Global Jockeys’ League (GJL), announced earlier this year, will feature a total prize fund of $15 million, with $5 million earmarked for the winning team, Racing Post reports.

Other confirmed names include James McDonald, João Moreira, Zac Purton, Christophe Lemaire, Mickael Barzalona, Yutaka Take, Irad Ortiz Jr, Flavien Prat and Vincent Ho.

The Global Jockeys’ League Format

Each jockey will captain their own team and race in distinctive team silks across a planned series of ten events.

Races will be held at Ascot, York, Leopardstown, the Curragh, Longchamp and Chantilly. Each meeting will feature six races.

Points will count towards a league table. The schedule is being planned to avoid clashes with existing Pattern races, as per Racing Post.

A standout aspect of the GJL is its ownership model. All 12 jockeys will not only ride but also own a share in their teams and the league.

John Ferguson, co-founder and BHA board member, told Racing Post this gives jockeys a bigger role in promoting and developing the sport.

Ryan Moore said:

“The line-up is incredibly strong and it’s exciting to be part of something that can help bring more attention to racing globally.”

William Buick added:

“It’s rare to have this calibre of jockeys all working together. We know racing needs to modernise how it connects with fans, and this league is a big step towards that.”

The GJL is also targeting younger audiences, with plans for live streaming, behind-the-scenes footage, and fan engagement through digital platforms.

Lachlan Fitt, co-founder of the league and former senior executive at Entain, confirmed that discussions are ongoing with broadcasters in the UK, France, Ireland and Australia.

While early reaction has been mostly positive, questions have been raised about scheduling pressures and travel demands.

Organisers say they are working closely with racing authorities to minimise disruption and ensure high welfare standards for both jockeys and horses, reports Racing Post.

Michael Owen, former England footballer and prominent racehorse owner, commented as per Racenet:

“This could be transformative for racing. It has the potential to bring in new fans and freshen up the sport’s image”.

The inaugural season’s full calendar and commercial partnerships are expected to be confirmed in the coming months.
