The world’s top football league begins at the Theatre of Dreams—a fitting stage for a start of the new season.
And it will indeed be a fresh start for many, with new managers, rebuilded squads, and new contenders competing for top positions.
The 2024/25 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, 16th August, with Manchester United hosting Fulham at Old Trafford.
The first round also brings us an early big clash, as Chelsea will host reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, 18th August.
Last season saw a fierce battle between Arsenal and Manchester City.
The title race went down to the final round, with Pep Guardiola's team managing to defend their two-point lead and secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title.
It was yet another heartbreak for Arsenal, who finished as runners-up for the second year in a row.
Many teams disappointed, notably Manchester United, who salvaged their season by winning the FA Cup but still finished in a distant eighth place.
The Premier League is undoubtedly the highest-quality football league in the world. It’s also the wealthiest, as English clubs traditionally spend the most money during the transfer window.
Moreover, English stadiums are in excellent condition and almost always full, while the broadcasting quality is top-notch, creating an extraordinary viewing experience for fans.
All top players aspire to play in the Premier League, and the clubs in this league, established under its current name in 1992, are consistently among the favourites to win European competitions.
The combination of quality, visual spectacle, and top-tier football is what captivates football fans worldwide.
The Premier League will have seven representatives in UEFA competitions this season.
Along with four teams in the Champions League—Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa—English football will also be represented by Tottenham and Manchester United in the Europa League, and Chelsea, who will compete in the play-off round for the Conference League, with expectations to challenge for that title.
In the past, the Big Four in the Premier League were Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea. However, the influx of Saudi investment in Manchester City has reshaped the landscape, with several clubs now believing they belong in the Big Four.
Currently, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal stand out as teams consistently at the top, while Manchester United, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Chelsea are objectively a step behind.
Who you consider to join the main three is more of a subjective choice than an objective one.
It’s hard to remember a season with such uncertainty about who will come out on top.
Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool are the favourites and are expected to battle for the title. Others will look for their chance, but these three teams appear to be ahead of the competition.

Liverpool is the only one of these three main title contenders entering the new season with a new manager. The long and successful tenure of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield has come to an end, marking the close of an era for this managerial giant.
Newcastle, under Eddie Howe, will aim to replicate their 2022/23 season, where they secured Champions League football. Tottenham hopes to take a step forward under Ange Postecoglou in a decisive season following a solid debut campaign.
Aston Villa is eager to return to Europe after playing excellent football last year and writing a new chapter in their recent history.
Giants Chelsea and Manchester United want to justify their massive investments and finally deliver on the pitch what’s expected of them—a fight for the Champions League, a fight for the title…
At the bottom end, newly-promoted Leicester, Southampton, and Ipswich will be trying to avoid the fate of last season's Championship graduates who dropped back down immediately—Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United.
Erling Haaland has been the Premier League’s top scorer for two consecutive years. Last season, he scored 27 goals, nine fewer than in his debut season, but it was still enough to top the charts, finishing five goals ahead of Alexander Isak.
Haaland is once again the favourite to win the Golden Boot this season, ahead of Mo Salah and Alexander Isak.
Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins will look to replicate their good seasons, while other teams haven’t made significant attacking signings.
Chelsea is expected to bolster their attack, having spent the summer chasing Victor Osimhen. Tottenham has signed former Bournemouth talisman Dominic Solanke, who could thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s system and potentially score 20+ goals.
Manchester United strengthened their squad with Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee and Mathijs de Ligt.
